Surrounded on three sides by water, Cornwall is a ruggedly charming peninsular crammed with character, much of it focused on the sea. The north coast offers particularly fine sandy beaches at Bude, Watergate Bay and Newquay with dramatic cliff views, especially at High Cliff between Boscastle and St.Gennys, where the rocks tower to a staggering 732 feet. There’s great surfing on this coast too, an adrenaline-based contrast to the Cornish Riviera in the south, which presents a gentler prospect of small coves, quiet fishing villages and secluded estuaries.

The South West Coast Path links all Cornwall’s 300 beaches with some of the finest sea views in Britain, including the iconic western-most point of Land’s End, and the stunning off-shore island of St. Michael’s Mount, a tiny shard of 1,000-year-old history, reachable on foot at low tide. Cornwall’s atmospheric tin mines, which form a World Heritage Site to the west, are fascinating.

Inland, Bodmin Moor draws walkers to crag-tops and lonely paths, and the high-tech environmental domes of the world-class Eden Project forms one of Britain’s most successful tourist centres. Other attractions include Truro’s Georgian architecture and its triple-towered cathedral in Gothic Revival style, plus there are many National Trust gardens and properties such as the wonderful Tudor house of Cotehele near Saltash, and the weathered ruins of Tintagel Castle on the northern coast which add character to Cornwall’s ancient story. Few leave the county without eating at least one Cornish Pasty. But the seafood and cream teas are outstanding, too.
