The poet A.E. Housman was entranced by south SHROPSHIRE’S “blue remembered hills”, but this wonderfully rural county has wider appeal. The market town of Ludlow is a gastronomic capital with specialist food shops and many restaurants. The medieval streets of Shrewsbury are rich in small, independent shops and the county is home to two World Heritage Sites: the Ironbridge Gorge Museums near Telford - 10 museums marking the birthplace of the industrial revolution - and the tongue-twisting Pontcysyllte Aqueductspanning the Welsh/Shropshire border, linking into the north Shropshire canals.

There are fairytale castles at Clun, Ludlow and Stokesay. Burford House is an example of stunning gardens found in many parts, and small market towns such as Bishop’s Castle, with its micro-brewery, and Ellesmere with its exquisite system of lakes or Meres add distinctive tone.

HEREFORDSHIRE shares the natural beauty of its neighbour, especially in the Golden Valley, in the lee of the Black Mountains, and the heights of Symonds Yat which form a stunning viewpoint over the River Wye near the Forest of Dean.

As a cider county, Herefordshire is fragrant with orchards, best seen on driving and cycle routes around Pembridge, Ledbury and Bromyard where it’s possible to visit farms. Pretty, half-timbered black and white villages form an attractive 40-mile drive through centres such as Eardisland, Dilwyn and the market towns of Kington and Leominster, where local food including Hereford beef can be sampled. Hereford’s Cathedral is home to the extraordinary ancient map, the Mappa Mundi.
