Discover the breathtaking natural beauty of the South Downs National Park in East Sussex from Mill Laine Barns, near Lewes. Enjoy the flexibility and comfort of a self-catering holiday cottage located near to every amenity, places of interest, attractions, stunning walks on the South Downs Way and Ouse Valley Way and coastal beaches. Mill Laine Barns are luxury rural cottages Tourist Board graded 4 star and 5 star. The barns are situated on a 500 acre working South Down farm, producing arable crops, prize-winning Southdown sheep, Sussex cattle and a Welsh Cob stud. Positioned in an accessible, yet secluded, valley in the village of Offham, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the historical site of the Battle of Lewes.

The beautiful eighteenth century grade II listed farmstead has been tastefully and sympathetically converted into luxurious holiday accommodation. All the barns are unique. Original features such as exposed oak beams and washing coppers have been preserved and great care has been taken to provide quality, comfort and style, to make your holiday a pleasant experience.

The Cottages
The farmstead comprises four quality cottages. The two largest, the Granary and Barn - both 5 star - each sleep six people, the Stable and Dairy - both 4 star, sleep four and two people respectively. Extra cots and Z-beds are available for small children. Every cottage is equipped to a very high standard, including wool carpets, quarry tiles, craftsman made wooden furniture, wood burning stoves, fully inclusive gas central heating, towels and linen, televisions, videos, DVDs, freeview, radio/CD players and washing machines. The three largest cottages also have dishwashers. There is a tumble drier in the laundry as well.

Things to do
Our farm cottages are located one mile from the historic county town of Lewes, eight miles from cosmopolitan Brighton and London-Victoria is one hour by train. We are within reach of many popular amenities such as; the Royal pavilion and Palace Pier, theatres and amusement for all walks of life at Brighton, Anne of Cleves House and the castle at Lewes, the Lavender Line and Bluebell Steam Railways, Drusillas Zoo at Alfriston, The South Down Way and Ouse Valley Way, Stanmer Park, Hickstead equine events, Plumpton Racecourse, the Bloomsbury Trail, Glyndebourne Opera House, a huge selection of gardens and stately houses, including Nymans, Leonardslee, Batemans, Sheffield Park, Wakehurst Place and the Millennium Seed Bank, Firle Place and Glynde Place among many others.

There are many excellent places to eat in Lewes one mile away and three very good pubs near to the cottages. The nearest is 150 yards away at the bottom of the drive.

This part of the farmstead is single storey and was where the dairy Shorthorn cows, used to have their standings in the winter months and where they came each morning and evening, to be hand milked. It is a delightful unit comprising one spacious bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a sitting room with stable door, beamed ceilings, large French window and a wood-burning stove. A small kitchen and dining alcove completes the accommodation for two people.

The Old Wash House

Self-contained well equipped luxury cottage converted from an 18th century washhouse. Shower room, hall, kitchen and bedroom for two people plus a z-bed for a child if requested. Self-service breakfast is provided in the cottage. Choice of fresh food including home laid eggs and homemade marmalade. Walkers, cyclists, horseriders, business people welcome. Pub nearby.

The Stable

Here the mighty shire horses which worked the farm were stabled in wide stalls. This area has been converted into a very large room, with a high beamed ceiling. At one end is the kitchen and dining area and at the other the comfortable sitting area with a wood burning stove. The room has windows giving views in two directions. Further on were the loose boxes were the riding ponies were kept and the brood mares gave birth and reared their foals. The farm was famous for the horses bred there, many of which can be seen in the pictures throughout the houses. These boxes and the tack room have been converted into two spacious bedrooms with two bathrooms, one of them en-suite.

Millers Cottage

Mill Laine Farmhouse dates from the 16th Century. The oldest section - the Millers Cottage - has always been a separate part of the farm house. It has recently been refurbished as a holiday cottage sleeping up to four people. The cottage is made from brick and flint in the traditional Sussex style and has all of its beams exposed. It comprises; the kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and fridge and its original features of a brick floor, aga and bread oven. The sitting room has an inglenook fireplace, wood burner and relaxing sofas for cosy evenings. The upstairs bathroom has the original freestanding bath and a separate modern shower. Two delightful double bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. The cottage has wool carpets and craftsman made furniture.

The Barn

This house provides accommodation for six people; with two bathrooms, one en-suite. There are three spacious bedrooms; two on the ground floor and a third one reached by an attractive galleried staircase. The massive threshing barn door has been converted to a French window giving access to the wonderful view up the valley. The threshing floor area of the barn has been converted to an enormous, lofty sitting room with a wood burning stove. Next to this is a huge, well appointed kitchen, with a picture postcard peephole formed from one of the original air vents, which gave comfort to the animals, which were housed there.

The Granary

The ground floor was originally the cart lodge where farm wagons and machinery were stored. This has been converted to provide a large sitting room with a wood burning stove, kitchen and dining area. The picture windows along the expanse of the downstairs rooms afford a splendid view of the valley and downland. There is also a hall, bedroom and bathroom. Overhead in the former granary where the corn was stored in the winter, there are two further bedrooms and a large bathroom which lead off from the beautiful long beamed landing.
