Warwickshire

WARWICKSHIRE

With village names such as Wooton Wawen and No Man’s Heath, you can be assured that you are stepping into one of the most idyllic and historic counties in England. Warwickshire is probably most famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare and his legacy is obvious in the vibrant artistic community that has given rise to cultural institutions as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the preserved cobbled streets and alleyways of Stratford upon Avon.

Warwick Castle

Warwickshire is beautifully picturesque, playing host to a vast number of historic houses, crumbing castles and stunning stately homes. Warwick Castle is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in history or architecture. With 1100 years behind it there’s plenty to experience, from the dank darkness of the castle dungeons to the displays of a working trebuchet.

Warwickshire’s Most Famous Son

A visit to Warwickshire wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Shakespeare’s birthplace. There are numerous tours taking you to the place he was born and the cramped loft in which he wrote many of his plays. The Royal Shakespeare Company holds internationally-acclaimed productions throughout the year and the theatre itself is set on the banks of the River Avon.

Fine Food

Thanks to the fertile farmland that surrounds it, Warwickshire has long been known for its superb restaurants. For a real treat, book a table in the intimate and atmospheric surroundings of Tailors Restaurant in Warwick. If you fancy star-spotting over a quiet drink, The Dirty Duck in Stratford is where the RSC’s actors tend to go after a night on the boards.
