LUXURY HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN KENT, SURREY & SUSSEX

KENT’s unusual charm is that it’s near to London yet famously remains “The Garden of England”, filled with lush vineyards, orchards, attractive villages and characterful oast houses that define the county’s landscape. There’s history here, too. Historic Chatham Dockyard celebrates Britain’s naval heritage; Canterbury is the charming homing point for Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’. And 12thcentury Leeds Castle is an outstanding example of grand fortification. Kent Life Museum on the banks of the River Medway describes much of the county’s more intimate, rural appeal.

SUSSEX, divided into East and West counties, presents a quieter prospect, summed up by the South Downs, a 100-mile range of chalk hills stretching from the attractive resort of Eastbourne into Hampshire, walkable all the way. Small villages, pretty market towns such as Lewes and the famous opera centre of Glyndebourne lie north of these hills, with Brighton’s history, beaches and nightlifecreating a stir on the coast. Eastwards, the small, ancient town of Battle is where William the Conqueror’s invasion triumphed, while nearby Hastings is home to colourful fishing-boats, small lanes and traditional seaside funThe Weald and Downland Open Air Museum near Chichester holds an extraordinary collection of historic buildings.

SURREY is one of Britain’s most wooded counties, yet is rich in sophisticated attractions such as Sandown Park Race Course, National Trust properties including 18thcentury Clandon Park with its lovely gardens, and historic shopping towns such as Guildford. The Surrey Hills are among fine walking areas threading the county.
