How to choose an accessible self-catering cottage

If you have a disability it can be tricky finding the right self-catering cottage.

This is why VisitEngland have developed the National Accessible Scheme, which is a nationally recognised rating for accessible accommodation, so you know which properties fit your requirements.  They ratings are in three different categories:

  • Mobility impaired and disabled people

  • Visually impaired and blind people

  • Hearing impaired and deaf people

    Handpicked selection

Premier Cottages offers a handpicked selection of 87 graded accessible cottages, covering all the categories.  These can be found in our Accessible Cottages collection.  For guests with mobility problems who do not need full wheelchair-friendly facilities, nearly two thirds of our properties have cottages where all the facilities (including at least one bedroom and bathroom) are available on the ground floor – just use the Ground Floor Facilities filter in our Search.  This is also great for families with toddlers!

It is important to check the individual details of a cottage before booking, to make sure it is suitable for your needs.  It is certainly worth phoning or emailing the owner to make sure that it meets your exact requirements, which will make for a much more enjoyable holiday.

    Try something different – Trampers

If you have mobility problems, it may be worth checking out which locations near your chosen holiday cottage have trampers for hire.  A tramper is a class 3 all-terrain cross-country buggy (as seen on Top Gear!) which can go places that wheelchairs cannot, enabling you to make the most of countryside walks, beaches and National Trust properties.  More and more attractions now have these available for hire at very modest rates.  Useful websites listing these places include http://www.countrysidemobility.org/ for the South West, and http://www.tramper.co.uk/try-a-tramper.php
