Wales is a land of mountains, ancient traditions and bewitching countryside. From snow-capped peaks to modern cities, it has much to offer all kinds of holidaymaker. Here we take a look at some of the most popular things to do in Wales.

North Wales

North Wales is best known for its mountainous Snowdonia National Park. Climbing Snowdon – the country’s tallest peak – is at the top of many itineraries and there are a number of routes suitable for walkers and climbers of all levels. Other Highlights in North Wales include:

  • Aber Falls – A stunning waterfall near Abergwyngregyn

  • Caernarfon Castle and Conwy Castle – Two well-preserved 13th century fortifications

  • Ffestiniog Railway – A 25-mile scenic tour of the countryside by steam train

    South Wales

A visit to the bustling modern Welsh capital of Cardiff is an essential daytrip for South Wales cottage holidays. Cardiff has many museums and cultural attractions, including Cardiff Castle, Millennium Stadium and the National History Museum. Highlights elsewhere include:

  • Big Pit National Coal Museum – Explore Wales’ rich mining past with a tour of a former coalpit near Blaenafon

  • Caerleon Amphitheatre – A wonderfully preserved Roman Ampitheatre near Newport

    Mid Wales

Mid-Wales is home to the Brecon Beacons National Park, a patchwork of rolling peaks, forests and waterfalls. Walking and cycling are popular activities throughout the region. Other attractions include:

  • Beaches of Cardigan Bay – There are lots of attractive coastal resorts on the west coast, and chances to see dolphins, seals and other marine life

  • National Showcaves Centre for Wales – Explore three different caves deep beneath the Brecon Beacons

    West Wales

West Wales has many excellent beaches that are suitable for surfing, sailing and relaxing. There are also many historic attractions to visit, such as:

  • The Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea – a celebration of the life and work of one of Wales’ foremost poets.

  • Carregcennen Castle – A spectacular romantic ruin in the countryside near Llandeilo
