We know the benefits of water intuitively. Swimming in the sea, floating free in a pool or sinking into a bubbling hot tub feels good – but why? Hydrotherapy is the catch all term for the advantages of soaking in water, but why are hot tubs good for us and what do they offer beyond other watery pursuits?
The first and most obvious benefit is stress relief. We instantly relax in a hot tub as the warm bubbling water massages our aches and pains away. Stress isn’t good for us. It can keep us awake at night, weaken our immune system and increase depression. Our coastal cottages with hot tubs offer twofold stress relief. A relaxing coastal walk followed by a soothing soak in a hot tub is the perfect antidote to stress.
If you have trouble sleeping, then a hot tub can help. Combined with the sea air of a coastal cottage retreat, if you stay in one of our cottages with a hot tub you might have more trouble waking up than not sleeping! It’s been found that passive body heating is an effective treatment for insomnia in older people. A study found that hot water promoted significantly deeper and more restful sleep - another plus for hot tubs.
As well as making us feel good, hot tubs are actually great for the heart. Relaxing in a hot tub can lower your blood pressure by raising your heart rate. Two studies have found that immersion in hot water can affect blood pressure. The first in 2016, found that passive heat therapy was particularly helpful to those with limited availability to exercise and may help reduce cardiovascular risk and mortality. A second, also found that hot tubs are safe for those with high blood pressure and that using them might actually reduce blood pressure. What’s not to like about hot tubs with these fantastic benefits.
