Millstream & Sowerberry

Stylish self catering in the heart of the North Pennines AONB

Set in a quiet corner of the historic ‘Butts’ area of Alston, these apartment style, two storey cottages have been imaginatively developed by the architect owner and were winners of an Eden District Council Design Award in 2009. The cottages are owner managed and each cottage has its own individual charm and character, incorporating a wealth of attractive features including solid oak floors, exposed beams and many other interesting little details. Each cottage has its own external patio area, one with a mill-race flowing through it, and two cottages have first floor living rooms opening out onto private balconies. The cottages are tastefully furnished with a blend of contemporary and country style furnishings to a very high standard, including paintings and prints by local artists, creating the perfect ambience for a relaxing holiday at any time.

They have been designed to cater in particular for guests with a creative or activity interest, offering the possibility of longer stays in order to develop creative work or to pursue a particular interest. Artists’ materials can be hired at a small extra charge, and binoculars are also available on payment of a refundable deposit.

Sowerberry, the most spacious of the cottages is equipped with enough cooking pots, crockery, cutlery, glasses etc, and with an extendable dining table, to enable group bookings taking two or three cottages to eat and relax there together.

At the heart of the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, Alston is an excellent base to explore this relatively undiscovered and unspoilt area, with its natural landscapes, tumbling waterfalls, and wealth of wildlife. Alston is a market town steeped in history with a good range of individual shops, tea rooms, local crafts, and character inns serving traditional ales and good food. You can forget your car and enjoy many good local walks right on the doorstep, from gentle riverside rambles to challenging hikes across the fells. Local attractions include the South Tynedale Railway and the Hub Museum both run by volunteers, and Killhope lead-mining museum reflecting how the area’s geology has shaped its history.

At the hub of five routes, it is also an ideal centre for exploring Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland National Park to the North, Durham City (world heritage site) to the east, beautiful Upper Teesdale to the south-east, the Yorkshire Dales to the south, and the Lake District to the west - all within an hour’s drive.

Meet the owner

Sonia Kempsey

The owners, Peter and Sonia Kempsey live in a fourth cottage on-site, and so are usually on hand to meet and greet guests as they arrive. Peter is a conservation architect and Sonia is an interior designer, and they have used their skills to create a unique holiday environment in each of their 'apartment-style' cottages. They used to run an art gallery just around the corner, and most of the pictures in the cottages are by local artists previously on show at the gallery. They love travelling and exploring new places and different cultures. They usually stay in self catering accommodation when they are on holiday, so they know what their guests would expect from their accommodation. They are also both passionate about the upland landscape in which they live - the North Pennines - and love telling their guests about the special places to explore locally.
