Hike or drive to stunning Wastwater Lake

In the heart of the Lake District National Park

John Ruskin wrote of Eskdale as 'The Gateway to Paradise' whilst Alfred Wainwright, the famous Lakeland author, described Eskdale as 'A perfect Arcadia in the hills – the finest of all valleys'.

Our 500 year old Grade II Listed Elizabethan cottages are romantically set in the delightful village of Boot, in the glorious Eskdale Valley, beside a quaint 17th century packhorse bridge over the tumbling Whillan Beck. All cottages are charming, full of character, cosy and warm with free WiFi, satellite TV, iPod docks, books, games and films. There are romantic cottages for 2, ideal for honeymoons, and larger cottages for families and groups, sleeping up to 10. Some are suitable for those with limited mobility or young children. We have two beautiful walled gardens and a lovely riverside paddock for picnics and barbecues.

Two pubs 50 and 150 yards away serving great food. Enjoy a home-made shortcrust pastry beef and ale pie and a pint of Cumbrian real ale after a long day on the fells! Sample delicious Lakeland ice creams from the village shop then stroll to the mill or St Catherine's 14th century church. A choice of welcome hampers is available including Cumberland sausages from the Queen’s appointed supplier. Plus chocolates, flowers and champagne for special occasions.

Within walking distance are: Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain; dramatic Wastwater, its deepest lake (recently voted Britain’s Best View); Hardknott Pass, its steepest road and Boot Mill, its oldest working water mill.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway is one of England’s prettiest train journeys. Lovely sandy beaches (20 minutes drive), 2 golf courses, climbing, canoeing, pony trekking, local bike hire and Eskdale cycleway, fishing, country houses, castles, gardens, waterfalls, Roman ruins, Neolithic stone circles and majestic landscapes to paint. Swim in the crystal clear River Esk and waterfall plunge pool in our village. Stanley Force waterfall, often described as ‘Lakeland’s Loveliest’, is a short walk from Boot. All the main lakes can be reached by car, as can the cathedral city of Carlisle, Georgian Whitehaven and the delightful market towns of Cockermouth, Keswick and Ulverston.

Get ‘far from the madding crowd’ and enjoy not using your car all week in this tranquil corner of the Lakes. From the cottage door, you can roam the fells and hike up England’s highest mountains. For those looking for something a little more relaxing, there are countless gentle walks beside rivers, through woods and meadows, often passing one of the Valley’s five cosy inns for ‘refreshments’ along the way.

Short breaks, full week bookings and flexible arrival dates

Throughout the year we are offering short breaks on all cottages, with flexible arrival and departure dates as well as special midweek rates. Please see our website for full details, lots more photos, customer reviews and online booking.

Meet the owner

Greg Poole

Now in our 29th year of providing exclusive, luxury accommodation here at Bridge End Farm Cottages, myself, Greg, and the team at Select Cottages are assuredly well-versed in providing all our guests with a truly exceptional Lakeland experience. Having lived and brought up a family in The Farmhouse, we now often return for our own holidays, as you can see from the photos! My connections with Premier Cottages go back a long way too! As one of the founding members and original Directors I introduced the name 'Premier Cottages' and served on the Board the first 4 years with responsibility for the brochure, marketing and recruitment. I am very proud that Bridge End Farm Cottages are one of less than a dozen properties that have remained under the same ownership and have continuously advertised in Premier Cottages in all 20 years of its existence! We look forward to personally welcoming you and your family in our Lakeland paradise!
