About & Contact

Little bolthole on the edge of Dorset AONB/NL

Top Cottage is a new addition in 2023. Accessed from the Barn courtyard it is a self contained annexe flat, part of our new farmhouse building, but completely separate.

The flat looks out over our fields to the west and towards the village of Child Okeford half a mile away. Although there is no garden you very much feel in the country. You can see the church tower and the village roofs in the distance. It is a lovely retreat and a base to explore Dorset.

Designed for two people it is reached up eight steps at the far end of the Barn courtyard. The living room is generous, light and airy, and the kitchen area although small is well equipped including microwave, hob, oven, fridge and dishwasher. The bedroom has a king-size bed and the generous bathroom has both bath and shower. We can provide a travel cot for a baby.

It would also make a superb addition for anyone wanting to take one of the other properties but needing another bedroom and sitting room. Grandparents needing their own space spring to mind.

Just outside Child Okeford in North Dorset, the farm is in a truly lovely position sitting under Hambledon Hill (one of two iron age hill forts next to us) looking down onto the River Stour. The walking is wonderful, and the views are magical. There is plenty to do for all interests - we are within reach of the coast and cities like Salisbury and Bath, and art galleries, gardens and plenty of National Trust properties.

Restaurants and pubs have changed radically over the years and there is a wonderful village on the doorstep with all sorts of pubs and shops and pop-up food providers. Further afield there are destination restaurants and pubs.

All towels and bedding are provided. Plus a welcome pack of fresh bread, coffee, tea, butter and eggs.

Reviews for Top Cottage at Chisel Barn

Meet the owner

Lucinda Sunnucks

We moved to Chisel Farm House - just below the farm buildings - in 2002. They had been the base for a large dairy and remain part of a working farm, with cattle and sheep grazing in the surrounding fields. For the first ten years we let the barns and fields to the local pony club for their summer camp, but in 2013 we converted one building and Chisel Barn was born. Roll on ten years, we have moved out of the farm house and built ourselves a new house on the site of the remaining buildings. I was brought up in Somerset and we moved to Dorset in 1996, We adore this area, the views are fantastic in every direction. We brought up our three children and spent long holidays riding and enjoying all that is around us. We want to share our huge love of this wonderful, tranquil spot. The three properties are simple and understated, but sympathetically decorated with all you could want in a holiday home. Access is easy and the flexibility of the different sized properties mean that different family and extended family holidays can be catered for. Living here all year round makes us experts on so much that is going on in Dorset, so do ask if need more information.
