Peacefully nestled in the quiet Northumbrian Village of Wall, this traditional, detached stone cottage sleeps four and is well equipped for a comfortable stay. Originally built in the mid 1800s as two cottages, at a time when the village had thriving industrtries with four working farms, a post office and general store, a nursery garden and butchers. Now the village is residential, but still retains its charm and character, with a vibrant community of all ages. The market town of Hexham is only 3 miles away, with its 12th Century, historic Abbey and an array of shops.
Church Cottage overlooks St. George's Church and is situated on the village green. A small patio catches the south-facing sun, a place to daydream or take in the rays with a cuppa! There are several lovely walks from the village, with Hadrian's Wall only half a mile away. Wall Fell rises to the East of the village, near the cottage - always a good spot to listen to birdsong, watch the buzzards soaring or search for the Iron-Age Fort remains. St. Oswald's Church just beyond the village, otherwise known as Heavenfield after the Battle of Heavenfield in 634, a pretty, little church set in a field with wonderful views over the North Tyne Valley. In 1991, Wall was designated a conservation area and recognized as an area of special architectural and historic interest. Around the village centre are several Bastle Houses; fortified farmhouses build in the time of the Reivers in the 17th and 18th centuries. The old village 'pant' or water pump remains and the listed War Memorial with its beautiful stone cross.
Church Cottage has been tastefully renovated in a cottage style, it is charming and homely, with exposed beams, an original stone feature wall and woodburner in the lounge. Ample, comfortable sofas to relax after a day's walk, watch a bit of television, chill out with a good book or that crafty project you always meant to start! The bright, spacious kitchen is a sociable space with original Victorian table with to seat six, a good place to plan the week's activities or share meals and laughter.
Two bedrooms set in the roof space upstairs; a king and a twin room. The ceilings are sloped with original beams, blackout blinds and deep sprung mattresses with memory foam toppers, to ensure a relaxing sleep even in the middle of summer. A small third room upstairs is provided as a 'KidZone', set up with Wii, games and DVD player. This room may also be used for a travel cot.
