Sitting room Lower Dolgenau

Montgomeryshire, Mid Wales

Montgomeryshire is known as ‘the Paradise of Wales’, these charming cottages are in the centre of this paradise. The area is beautiful. Nearby is the Hafren Forest, from which the rivers Severn, Wye and Rheidol rise. The Plymlimon Mountains have many signposted walks and bounds the Clywedog Dam, home to sailing, fishing and nature trails. Rhayder, with its lakes is the home of the Red Kite. There are nature walks from the Elan Valley Visitors Centre and a farm where visitors can see the Red Kites feed in winter. Locally there are two golf courses, a driving range, pony trekking and sport centres with facilities for badminton, squash and swimming.

Meet the owner

Ruth Macklin Smith

I visited Montgomeryshire in 1962 and fell in love with the peace and tranquillity of this perfect paradise. I bought my first cottage, Cwmmegan in 1964, started to let it as a holiday home in 1991. However, in the meantime, I bought first Lower Dolgenau and then Dolgenau Hir spending what little leisure time I had as a full time antique dealer, restoring the properties. I was determined to keep as many original features whilst ensuring warmth and comfort for my guests. Come and enjoy the cosy, peace of these rural cottages ideally placed not only for relaxing but also for enjoying the many special features of Mid Wales. I greet every guest personally and am available 24/7.
