Dominoes is an architecturally stunning retro-modern holiday home located in the South Hams village of Stoke Gabriel overlooking the ‘Mill Pool’. Beautifully refurbished and modernised in 2017, it has retained its 1960’s original 'modernist' pine ceilings, feature brick walls, and south facing wall of glass. The reverse level design provides a panoramic view of woodland, water and wildlife.
On the first floor the spacious open plan lounge/diner has a woodburning stove, WiFi enabled satellite TV, and dining area. The well equipped kitchen overlooks the lounge, making for a sociable cooking space.
Outside there is a car port, which has an electric car charging point, support racks for kayaks or bikes, plus a parking area. The garden has a patio and barbecue area that captures the afternoon sun next to a dog and kiddie proof enclosed garden, which looks uphill over fields to a tree lined hilltop. The patio area at the front has a seating area with wonderful views of the Mill Pool for an al fresco sunrise (to the left) over a cuppa, or sunset (to the right) over a glass of something chilled.
Subject to pre-booking dogs are very welcome to enjoy Dominoes. Built into the hillside, so the first floor living area is easily accessible by dogs up a path at side of the house. The rear garden is fenced and secure.
For families with small children the upstairs bedrooms can both fit a travel cot and one can fit a fold up extra bed. A stair gate, changing table, travel cot (without bedding), baby bath and bath toys, a high chair, and socket covers are all available on request.
For people with reduced mobility, Dominoes provides two bedrooms on the same level as the living area. The house has steps up to the front door, and a staircase from the ground to the first floor. The level rear patio is accessed from three doors on the first floor by a single step. Please read the accessibility statement for more information.
The seasons and the tides provide an ever-changing backdrop to staying at Dominoes. The south facing reverse level design provides a panoramic view of water woodland from the living area and bedrooms. The sun rises behind the woodland and sets over the hills, changing the light on the water and trees as it goes. At night the skies are dark and the only noises are the owls and an occasional duck (and Canada Geese in some seasons).
Stoke Gabriel is a thriving village community with two pubs, two bistro/cafes, an ancient church, a shop and gift shop. It is a great place just to wander through woods, fields and along the river banks, and kids love crabbing on the weir. Kayak hire is available from the weir directly onto the river Dart. Stoke Gabriel is a great base for exploring south Devon. The village is 15 minutes drive from Totnes with its independent shops, pubs and restaurants, 30 minutes from Dartmouth and less than an hour from Exeter and Salcombe. Stoke Gabriel is located centrally for many locations of interest, including Agatha Christie’s home at Greenway, and the fabulous arts and crafts house and garden at Coleton Fishacre. The village is only a 30 minute drive to the centre of Dartmoor National Park. A great range of beaches are easily within reach, from the family friendly sandy beaches of Torbay, Bantham and Salcombe to quiet hidden coves and less frequented sands.
