A hideaway within a hideway

This 2 bedroom single-storey house is set in the mill's former walled kitchen garden which is one of the features of this cottage. The garden extends to over half an acre and is surrounded by high walls with old fruit trees making it perfect for families with young children or dogs. There are tables and chairs outside along with loungers and a barbecue. Beyond the walls of your private garden are communal gardens. The cottage sleeps four in two bedrooms: arranged either as two doubles or one double, one twin. There is a modern wet room with underfloor heating. The living/dining room is L-shaped and there is a separate kitchen.

Visitors have access to the mill’s well equipped games room and gym. Wild swimmers will appreciate the swimming platform which provides easy access to the river and the outdoor hot shower. You can explore the river further using our Canadian canoes.

Meet the owner

James Johnston & Nick Unwin

James Johnston and Nick Unwin who live on-site began to transform the mill in 2008. They created the five cottages in order to share this beautiful location. Luxury isn’t just about scatter cushions. High pressure water systems, thick curtains, fast and secure WiFi along with a warm welcome and their local knowledge of places and restaurants are probably even more important. Mendham Mill is testament to a horticultural and artistic heritage. Its fabulous gardens have been developed by Nicholas Unwin whose great-grandfather founded Unwins Seeds. James Johnston is Chairman of the Munnings Museum, home to a collection of over 650 paintings by artist Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) PRA, who grew up at Mendham Mill and was inspired by the landscape you see today. Nick and James love talking to guests, many of whom have become regular visitors.
