About & Contact

Member since 2011

An exceptional wildlife haven with glorious views of the River Orwell

These attractive eco ground floor buildings were converted in 2010 into three, very comfortable, holiday retreats sleeping from 2 up to 6 + cots. Butterfly sleeps 6, Primrose 4/5 and Cygnet sleeps 2. Cygnet cottage is NAS 2 graded making it accessible for wheelchairs.

Primrose cottage has a dining table large enough to seat 12. Alternatively, you can eat out on the large deck with glorious views across the Orwell. Each barn is beautifully decorated with reclaimed brickwork, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers, and has its own courtyard/garden. Every bedroom is either en suite or has its own bathroom and mattresses are deep pocket sprung ensuring a good night’s sleep. They can be either super king or twins. Kitchens are equipped with the cook in mind, with bread makers, mixers, slow cookers, sandwich makers, American style ice making fridge/freezers (in Butterfly and Primrose) and all have dishwashers and washer/driers. The cottages ooze quality – are individually designed with handmade designer curtains. Each cottage has WiFi, iPod docks, flat screen TV, barbecue and garden furniture on the terrace/deck. Spa treatments can be arranged.

Outside there is a large heated games barn, with table tennis, snooker and a pre-school play area. The hot tub and grass area for football and games for the kids are very popular. Step out of your cottage and reconnect with nature. There is immediate access to our 700 acre farm (our working farmyard is elsewhere), great riverbank walks with your dog past hidden creeks to the Butt & Oyster pub at Pin Mill and to Shotley Marina, the South Suffolk Cycle route B is 2 fields away and there are internationally acclaimed bird watching sites on our farm. Over 100 different species of birds have been spotted on the farm, marshes and estuary. Marsh harriers, buzzards, kestrels and owls are seen regularly and a pair of peregrine falcons sighted in Spring 2015. We have an exceptional diversity of wildlife seen from your cottage. Glimpse iridescent butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies and the heron popping by. Look for shingle-loving flowers and oyster catchers on the shell beach by the river 10 minutes from the cottages. Come and see if you can spot them!

Should you need to venture out in the car there are beaches at Felixstowe, Jimmy's Farm, Alton Water (sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, cycle hire) and Constable Country are all within 30 minutes. Horse riding is just down the road, a 5 minute drive. Why not take the Shotley foot/cycle ferry across the estuary to Harwich and Felixstowe or barge and river trips from Ipswich. Local, fully qualified Cordon Bleu chef, who will host dinner parties or provide ready meals using local ingredients.

Meet the owner

Hazel or Richard Wrinch

Richard has lived on the Shotley peninsula all his life, and came to the farm in 1971. Hazel is not a farmer’s daughter but has become a farmer over the last 40 years! We farm 520 acres of land at Shotley. We have 3 grown up children and a 4 year old grand-daughter and we live at Hill House which is near the cottages (but not on top of them!). We are on hand 24/7 should you need us. We also farm 110 acres of marshland which are part of the Orwell SSSI which is an internationally important area for wading birds. Richard is interested in wildlife, the environment and archaeology whilst Hazel looks after Orwell View Barns holiday cottages and helps out with the farm paperwork. Last autumn we took on another 1000 acres of contract farmed land nearby though luckily our son will be helping us with this new opportunity!
