Porthmeor Cottages are close to the South West Coast Path, an ideal spot for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts as well as art and history lovers who can soak up the unique light and characterful landscape. Just west of St Ives and surrounded by countryside and coast it is perfectly located for exploring West Cornwall. Set in 100 acres of working farmland, Porthmeor Cottages and the land they occupy has been worked and lived on by the Berryman family since the 16th century. Amid this land is a fortified iron age settlement, the Porthmeor settlement, with the remains of courtyard houses, roundhouses and a fogou. Nearby is lovely Zennor, where mermaids adorn the church. Legend has it that a young Cornishman was lured into the sea by the beauty of a Zennor mermaid. Visit the Moomaid café and sample a Moodmaid ice-cream, made just two fields away at Tremedda Farm. Further afield, visit Land’s End, the most westerly (and often most windy) point of the UK mainland. Cross the causeway (on foot or by boat depending on the tides) to St Michael’s Mount near Penzance, an impressive island with a historic castle. If surfing is more your style, Porthmeor Beach in St Ives is for you. For a completely different type of drama visit the world-famous Minack Theatre for an open-air performance to remember. Literacy enthusiasts may be interested to know that Porthmeor Farm and its surroundings have good pedigree; Virginia Wolfe stayed in Porthmeor Farmhouse, DH Lawrence lived in Zennor and the Farm and surrounding area have been filmed for Rosamund Pilcher’s TV adaptations. You’ll be spoiled for days out; from the family beaches of St Ives and Porthcurno or the quieter local beaches, Boat Cove, next to Pendeen lighthouse or Portheras, both 15 minutes’ drive away. We are open all year, so whether you yearn for a fun-filled, sun-filled Cornish adventure or would like to kick back with a glass of wine by one of our warming log fires, we look forward to welcoming you soon.
William and I, Lee Berryman, live at Porthmeor Farm where the Berryman family have farmed since the 16th century, with our children James and Rosanna being the 14th generation. Eliza’s Croft was built about 120 years ago for William’s grandparents, Eliza and Jim. Clippity Clop was originally a barn used to house the farm stallion. William made the conversion to a self-catering holiday cottage in 2004.
