Tranquil Exmoor retreat - ideal for families & large groups

Rainsbury House sits on a hill overlooking a stunning valley with the Haddeo River running through it within the Exmoor National Park. The secluded 'Upton Arm' of Wimbleball Lake adjoins our woodland and it’s alive with birds of prey, red and roe deer, badgers, foxes, and otters frequent the Haddeo and the lake.

This is a perfect place for a family holiday or for groups of friends, with lots to do within a mile radius. It’s also an artists and photographers paradise, which is why we’ve converted the original old farmhouse into a studio for hire for guests and from which to run painting & photography courses. We also offer fly fishing and fly tying courses (…and these can be combined with a days clay pigeon shooting) as well as spa treatments on request.

We are ideally positioned for adults and children who like lots of outdoor activities. This is absolutely fantastic walking, cycling and horse riding country and there are enough activities on offer around the lake to keep even the most hyperactive guests occupied. The woods and wildlife around the lake are jaw-droppingly magnificent and constant delight. The coastline is spectacular and we’re blessed with wonderful networks of coastal paths and bridleways for walkers, cyclists & horseriders.

We are family friendly too, providing cots, highchairs, stairgates, baby monitors, non-slip bath mats, nappy bins, changing mats, booster seats, toys, books & DVDs.

Both properties have been luxuriously refurbished and redecorated, with 5 new bathrooms & 2 new kitchens with granite worktops. All bedrooms have sumptuous new mattresses and, with crisp, high quality cotton sheets, duck down duvets and pillows (hypoallergenic if you have allergies), you can look forward to a good nights sleep.

We are also eco-friendly. We have installed a large Austrian wood pellet boiler to heat all properties, including our own home and the painting studio so whatever the time of year, you’ll always be toasty. In addition, The Barn has a large woodburner for cosy evenings. We have two barbecue areas and provide two barbecues.

If you don’t fancy doing your own cooking, we have excellent local caterers on call who can come and provide gorgeous meals throughout your time with us or for a special dinner party. All we ask is that you give us plenty of advance notice of your requirements.

Rainsbury House is the perfect place from which to explore all Exmoor has to offer as well as the stunning Somerset & North Devon coastline.

Dulverton, our nearest town, (6 miles away) is very attractive. It’s small but perfectly formed with a well-provisioned Co-op, butcher, grocers, Deli, antique shops, galleries, bookshops, Exmoor National Park shop and information centre, bank and Post Office. It also has several truly excellent teashops and restaurants. Upton has a great pub, The Low Trow, about a mile from us.

The area is crammed full of historical interest, going back to Roman times. And what did the Romans ever do for us? Well, they took up residence less than 20 yards from Rainsbury House where they built a fort accommodating 400 soldiers for more than 200 years. They packed their bags for home in 419 AD, but the boundary of the fort is still a visible feature in the garden.

Whether you’re a small or large family, a group of families or friends looking to holiday together, Rainsbury House has a great deal to offer. Whether its seclusion and relaxation, or lots of outdoor activity that you’re looking for, we have it all in spades on our doorstep… and the accommodation is pretty good too!

Meet the owner

Terry and Angela Brownbill

Terry and Angie welcome you. We both reached a time in life when we wanted a change of lifestyle, to swap the frenetic pace of London for a rural idyll on Exmoor. Angela had been a Partner in a City law firm for many years and I had been a national newspaper journalist and owner of a public relations business. We moved to Rainsbury House in December 2012 and embarked on an 18 month renovation project to create the perfect getaway for families and groups of friends in this stunning corner of Exmoor on the Devon/Somerset border. Exmoor is a world on its own. It really is ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’. We love nothing more than welcoming guests and introducing them to the delights this stunning area has to offer. Well, that’s enough about us, what about you? We look forward to meeting you...
