About & Contact

Beautiful riverside, dog-friendly corn mill

This beautifully converted corn mill sits in a quiet, idyllic setting on the banks of the River Lyvennet in Cumbria. Take in the wonderful views and become acquainted with the inhabitants of the river, which includes kingfisher, dipper, brown trout, heron and the occasional otter.

The mill has been here since at least 1327 and every effort has been made to preserve its history, including retaining the original mill workings such as millstones, applewood cogs and mill gearing.

On the ground floor is the designer kitchen is hand-made with granite tops and integrated appliances - dishwasher, washer/dryer, fridge and freezer. The Rangemaster cooker (double oven) is situated in an alcove which used to house the mill’s drying ovens, an ideal place to cook brown trout caught in the River Lyvennet.

Guests can dine at the hand-made oak table with a view of the ground floor mill workings with main shaft; the workings are encased behind glass. There is a cloakroom with WC and entrance hall and the ground floor has underfloor heating with the rest of the Mill having oil fired central heating.

On the first floor the lounge has access to the viewing balcony; an ideal place to take in the wonderful views and is perfect spot for views of the river’s varied wildlife. The lounge has a gas stove with logs. Another feature of the room is the floor which is composed of home grown oak boards sourced from Keld Farm incorporating 4 of the original mill stones. There are 2 comfortable sofas to sink into when relaxing watching either Sky TV or a DVD.

The twin bedroom on the first floor is snugly positioned above the kitchen, has its own en suite bathroom with wc, wash hand basin and walk in shower.

On the second floor is the master bedroom with king-size bed, comfy chairs, hospitality tray and windows with views of the river. The room has oak flooring, doors and hand-made furniture. The decor in the room is to a high standard with goose down duvets and linen sheets complete your comfort and needs. The en suite has bath with shower, wc and wash handbasin.

Steele's Mill is a dog friendly holiday home; with an enclosed garden making it an ideal holiday home for those who want to bring their pets along.

This is an ideal base for an active outdoor holiday, especially for cyclists & walkers. There are several bridleways and footpaths in the area with quiet country lanes to peruse at your leisure. Bike hire can be arranged from the door with Inspiring Cycling.

Good home-cooked food and a friendly welcome are guaranteed at the local White Horse Inn, within walking distance in Kings Meaburn. The small farming village is 5 miles west of Appleby the old county town of Westmorland, and 10 miles south of Penrith. Appleby lies in a loop of the river Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon, just a few miles away.

The Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines are close by. A little further afield, are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian’s Wall.

Of special interest to fly fishers is our one mile of private double bank fishing for brown trout on the River Lyvennet – fishing is reserved exclusively for our guests.

Meet the owner

Karen Addison

Karen took over the running of Steeles Mill in 2009, her parents had been the driving force behind the restoration of Steele's Mill in 2006. The bar was set very high by Steele and Margaret but the emphasis is on a warm, friendly welcome to all, to create a perfect escape from the hectic world we live in. I live in the village with my 3 boys and two stunning Labradors called Boris and Bert, father and son.
