The Chestnuts main lounge

Multi award winning cottages, combining luxury living with a design edge

Each historic cottage has been lovingly restored to preserve the traditional and brought bang up to date with contemporary luxuries.

The stone floors, oak beams and inglenook fireplaces of each cottage exude old world charm, while stylish furnishings, original artworks and modern conveniences such as underfloor heating make them glorious places to be.

Women and Home Magazine said “Culls Cottage is a stylish old charmer, with its roots in the 16th century. In beautiful Southrop village. Stand by for a ‘group gasp’, as you walk into the low-beamed, stone floored living room. Bathed in bright light till evening it’s the perfect place to catch up over a glass of something sparkly”.

We not only have Champagne glasses and essential ice bucket, but red and white wine glasses and tumblers for Gin and Tonic too. In fact we think you will want for nothing in our kitchens, which are equipped for the keenest chef; Global knives, a range of cookery books and even lemon zesters. You can cook up a storm with local produce purchased from one of the nearby markets or farmshops such as Daylesford.

For coffee lovers we have espresso machines, grinders and plungers. Our range of white china and cutlery is enough to have a full set in the dishwasher and still have lots left to use.

Our lounges comfortably seat six and The Chestnuts benefits from a second lounge, also with television and dvd player, so you can enjoy peace in one, whilst your children watch movies in the other. Enjoy the iPod dock, digital radio or brag to friends and family on Facebook with the free WiFi.

Culls cottage has three double bedrooms and The Chestnuts has four doubles. One of Culls’ bedrooms is downstairs with a nearby bathroom. For little ones we can supply (free of charge) cots, highchairs and stair gates and we have a tiny tots box of toys.

The bathrooms are places to linger and luxuriate, with drenching showers, double ended baths and indulgent toiletries for a spa-like feel.

The Cotswolds are magnificent whatever the season and our cottages are equipped for all weathers; the roaring fires, woollen throws and goose down duvets will keep you toasty in winter and our stunning gardens each with numerous places to sit and relax, are a haven in summer. Both gardens are loved by our gardener and are special places to enjoy. Contemplate the view towards Shilton ford from The Chestnuts or the revel in the majesty of Red Kites soaring overhead at Culls Cottage. If you do decide to venture out of our cottages you could take a walk over the fields, enjoying the wildlife, ancient churches and have a refreshment break at say picturesque Eastleach or Burford. Try cycling our lush lanes; you can hire cycles nearby and the peddling is easy over the gently rolling countryside that surrounds us. Go further afield and there is more fun for all. Families love The Cotswold Wildlife Park and Adam Henson’s Farm. Go punting in Oxford, take in the Shakespearean theatre at Stratford, or rampage on the ramparts of Warwick Castle. Walk with the Romans along nearby Akerman Street, visit Chedworth Roman Villa, or Cirencester’s Corinium Museum. Visit the standing stones of Avebury, the Rollrights or Stonehenge. Snap up a designer outfit at bargain price at Bicester’s Chic Outlet Village. If literature moves you visit, Jane Austen’s Bath, The Roald Dahl Museum or Laurie Lees countryside inspiration for ‘Cider with Rosie’.

Once back at the cottages use our off street parking and walk to The Rose and Crown Pub at Shilton or The Swan at Southrop, each of which serves great food for lunch or supper.

Meet the owner

Christine Burton

We purchased The Chestnuts in 1998 and lived there until 2005. Today we live a life split between The Cotswolds, Australia and other wine producing regions of the world. Phil is a wine consultant and Chris looks after the holiday properties. We love travel, books, architecture, cooking and naturally wine. You will find elements of these things in both of our cottages. Our houses are peaceful places - full of light, white and neutrals with gardens to enjoy a read and a gin and tonic.
