LUXURY HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN SOMERSET
Most people are aware of Somerset through the internationally-renowned Glastonbury Festival. However, there is much more to this glorious county than a weekend in a muddy field - from the ancient myths and legends and historic buildings to the beautiful countryside and rugged glory of its coast. The countryside is littered with rural, rustic villages where you can buy local produce and hand-crafted goods. However, if you prefer more contemporary shopping, it also boasts metropolitan shopping centres and market towns.
Glorious Glastonbury
A trip to Somerset isn’t complete without a trip to Glastonbury Tor, which you’ll find close to Glastonbury town. The view from the Tor is truly spectacular and it becomes easy to understand how so much folklore has built up around this iconic site, supposed to be the home of Gwyn ap Nudd – Lord of the Underworld.
Nearby, the city of Wells offers a more sedate example of Somerset’s past. Wells is England’s smallest city and offers one of the finest examples of 12th Century architecture in its astonishing cathedral.
Wookey Hole provides a fun and fascinating day out for families with children. A guided tour through this labyrinth of spectacular caves will see you encountering stalactites and stalagmites and learning the local story of the Witch of Wookey.
Fantastic Food in the West Country
The West Country is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the UK’s best providers of farm produce and seafood. As a result, there are many superb restaurants springing up and cementing Somerset as a culinary hotspot. Be sure to check out the Olive Mill in Bridgwater for an informal, delicious meal. Romantic couples might want to book a table at The Willow Tree restaurant in Taunton, where they can enjoy fine dining in an intimate, 17th Century building.
