LUXURY HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN NORTHUMBERLAND & DURHAM

The striking NORTHUMBERLAND coastline between walled Berwick upon Tweed and more southerly Amble is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and one of the finest seascapes in Britain. Its broad sandy beaches and dunes surge for 39 miles through resorts such as Seahouses where ferries can be taken to the wildlife-rich Farne Islands, while further north lies the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, a founding centre of Britain’s Christian heritage, much visited for its castle and serene priory ruins.

The buzzing metropolitan streets of Newcastle upon Tyne contrast with the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, served by small towns such as Haltwhistle, near the breathtaking archaeological excavation area of Vindolanda. Northumberland National Park stretches northwards through picturesque river valleys including the Beamish and Rede into the remote Cheviot Hills, ideal for walking. Kielder Forest adds further accessible wilderness, while towns such as Morpeth offer history and excellent shopping. Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, is called the “Windsor of the North”.

Heading south into COUNTY DURHAM leads to one of the finest Norman buildings in Europe, Durham Cathedral, final resting place of the Venerable Bede, author of the first English history. The city’s 11thcentury castle links with the cathedral to form a World Heritage Site, while the wider county’s attractions include the lead mining museum of Killhope, in the Durham Dales, the newly regenerated once-industrial Heritage Coast between Sunderland and Hartlepool, and the immense North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It’s time to visit this beautiful part of the country – so select your Northumberland or Durham holiday cottage from our hand picked selection of 4* and 5* properties.
