LUXURY HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN YORKSHIRE & LANCASHIRE

YORKSHIRE’s great charm lies in the fact that it encompasses many of Britain’s most scenic wild areas but some of its very best cities, too. The ancient walled Roman river city of York is crammed with museums, atmosphere and life, Leeds has wonderful shopping, attractive galleries and artistic links to Henry Moore; and nearby Wakefield is home to the exciting new Hepworth Gallery.

Yet the two national parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors give rise to some of the finest views and best upland walking in Britain. Sweet villages such as Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters, provide much rural appeal. And a varied coastline includes the grand resort of Scarborough with twin sweeping bays and towering castle, quiet Hornsea, at the end of the Trans-Pennine Trail, and cobbled Whitby, chillingly associated with Dracula tales.

Neighbouring LANCASHIRE claims one of the liveliest coastal resorts in Britain, Blackpool, with its famous Tower, pleasure beach and vast framework of festivals and entertainment including fireworks, light-shows and screaming fairground rides. Historic Lancaster’s narrow streets offer a far quieter style of entertainment with a medieval castle, Victorian cathedral and fine Georgian architecture. In the county’s remotest corners lie the beautiful Forest of Bowland, ideal for walking and cycling, and Arnside and Silverdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty around Morecambe Bay with saltmarshes, woods and vast bird-watching opportunities. Towns such as Clitheroe, with its own castle, relish the growing move for locally grown food.
