Lake District & Cumbria

LUXURY HOLIDAY COTTAGES THE LAKE DISTRICT & CUMBRIA

Wild and beautiful, the Lake District lies within the rugged heart of Cumbria, and is England’s largest National Park, holding the country’s highest peak, Scafell Pike, and 20 major lakes including England’s longest, Windermere and deepest, Wastwater. It is hugely popular for walking, climbing, boating and mountain-biking but has a subtler side, with links to the poet William Wordsworth, whose museum-home is Dove Cottage at Grasmere, and to children’s writer Beatrix Potter, who is celebrated at a museum in Bowness-on-Windermere.

For the less active, there are many scenic drives, including along the wonderful 21-mile stretch between Windermere and Keswick, which takes in six lakes along with impressive views of Dunmail Raise and the slopes of Helvellyn. Small towns and villages such as Ambleside and Keswick have attractive centres and there are distinctively quirky attractions such as the country’s smallest church, tiny St. Olaf’s at the head of the Wasdale Valley, and Keswick’s Pencil Museum, home to the world’s largest pencil.

Beyond the exquisite lakes and their surrounding peaks, valleys, villages and fells, wider Cumbria is a vast, sparsely-populated but beautiful county extending from northerly ancient Hadrian’s Wall - shadowed by a coast to coast walk - to the shops and seaport bustle of Barrow-in-Furness in the South. Cumbria’s West coast includes sandy beaches of old Victorian resorts such as Seascale and tiny, cobbled Ravenglass a mile from 13th Century Muncaster Castle with its large and colourful gardens. Britain’s most scenic railway is the 72-mile route from Settle to Carlisle, running through the beautiful Eden Valley.

Now that you’re heard about this wonderful area you just need to select the Cumbria holiday cottage that’s perfect for you.
