'More of a Tuscan villa than a station' said the journalist who came to stay from the Times and it is true that Castle Howard Station was always the jewel in the crown of the York – Scarborough railway.

Now a grade II listed building, nestling in the Derwent valley, it has proved to be a wonderful retreat, where the only interruption to non-stop birdsong is the occasional sprinter train following the meandering railway alongside the river. Its location in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (15 minutes drive from York & 45 minutes from Scarborough, and sandwiched nicely between the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds) makes it an enviable base from which to sally forth and make the most of the many attractions that Yorkshire has to offer.

Dog owners and walkers have miles of footpaths and varied scenery on the doorstep. Cycling is rapidly becoming the ‘must do’ sport locally in the wake of the recent successful Yorkshire ‘Grand Départ”.Platform 1 can offer superb facilities for each of these activities. 'No one ever left Yorkshire hungry!' Another quote from another tourist guru - and how true it is.

With some of the best natural produce in England from the land and the sea, Yorkshire folk take their food seriously and Yorkshire portions are not for the faint-hearted. Whether you like to shop at local farmer’s markets and cook your own in Platform 1 or whether your taste is a local pub or a celebratory meal at a Michelin-star restaurant, this area offers it all. There are so many local attractions it is impossible to list them. A comprehensive supply of timely tourist information is always available in the apartment together with both walker and cycling maps and many vouchers offering discounts at attractions or restaurants. The owners are happy when their guests are happy. The guests come first and their guest's experience must be perfect every time.

Platform 1 can accommodate a family of four; a cot and high chair is available. Guests only need to bring their personal belongings, everything else is here and provided to the highest standard. A welcome basket of local provisions has contents for afternoon tea on arrival and breakfast for a few days. The kitchen cupboard holds a few basics so you do not have to empty your own kitchen. There are maps and clothes drying facilities for walkers and cyclists, secure storage for cycles, and special provision for dog owners including pet bedding and towels, water/feed bowls, poo bags and a treat or two! If the guests are happy, then the owners are happy!

Meet the owner

Anne Collins

Castle Howard Station has been a labour of love for Edmund since 1984, when he acquired it. The Station had fallen into some disrepair and he set about trying to restore it, keeping as many of the original features that had not already been removed. After 20 years of running a veterinary practice from the old public rooms, he and Anne decided to transfer the practice elsewhere and covert the vacated area to a luxury holiday apartment. We were determined to create a special, but practical, environment which could easily accommodate guests with dogs, yet be cleaned effectively for those who don’t have (or don’t even like) dogs and who may even have allergies to them. This has worked very well so far and we have had great pleasure in welcoming many guests over the years to enjoy the peace and privacy of Platform 1 with or without their pets.
