Beautiful cottages at historic East Anglian Watermill

Watch for kingfishers and otters as you canoe along the river. Extensive coarse fishing in the main river and mill stream. Experience the thrill of wild swimming (popularised by author Roger Deakin in 'Waterlogged' who particularly loved the waters around Mendham Mill). Afterwards, play table tennis or pool or darts in the large, Games Room. Or use the on-site gym. There is so much to do here.

Alternatively, enjoy the gardens designed and maintained by co-owner Nicholas Unwin whose great-grandfather founded Unwins Seeds. The views over the water meadows which surround Mendham Mill have been almost unchanged for centuries and inspired artist Sir Alfred Munnings who was born here in 1878 and grew up in The Miller’s House at Mendham Mill. Perhaps that is why according to more than one visitor, arriving at Mendham Mill is like arriving in Narnia. It’s a different world.

The cottages are fully equipped for comfort with independent central heating and hot water, Egyptian cotton bed linen, fluffy white towels and well stocked kitchens. Fast WiFi throughout. All dining rooms can seat more than the numbers accommodated in the cottage should you have any visitors while staying (no fold-out or sofa beds though).

There is excellent shopping in neighbouring Harleston, 2 miles away which has traditional, independent shops along the high street with locally-sourced produce including an award-winning chocolatier. Just 12 miles downstream the river becomes part of the Broads network at Beccles for day trips and river cruises. Southwold’s famous beach and lighthouse is 15 miles to the east and Norwich and Thetford forest are equally accessible.

Dine at the village pub, just a five minute walk from the mill or in one of the many local places we will tell you about. We can put you in touch with a local chef who will come and cook in your own cottage.

With cottages ranging from 1 bedroom to 4 bedrooms, two of which are dog-friendly, there is something for everyone here.

Meet the owner

James Johnston & Nick Unwin

James Johnston and Nick Unwin who live on-site began to transform the mill in 2008. They created the five cottages in order to share this beautiful location. Luxury isn’t just about scatter cushions. High pressure water systems, thick curtains, fast and secure WiFi along with a warm welcome and their local knowledge of places and restaurants are probably even more important. Mendham Mill is testament to a horticultural and artistic heritage. Its fabulous gardens have been developed by Nicholas Unwin whose great-grandfather founded Unwins Seeds. James Johnston is Chairman of the Munnings Museum, home to a collection of over 650 paintings by artist Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) PRA, who grew up at Mendham Mill and was inspired by the landscape you see today. Nick and James love talking to guests, many of whom have become regular visitors.
