Great for families and groups including the dog

Monnington House, Garden Cottage and the Cider Mill are situated at the end of a No Through Road. on the edge of a family farm in the beautiful Wye Valley almost equidistant from Hereford and Hay on Wye. Surrounded by cider orchards and rural farmland the location is tranquil and peaceful and there is almost no traffic.   It is private and yet well connected to nearby  local activites and pubs and shops and accessible from the M5 and M50.

Monnington House and Garden Cottage together sleep 18 in 9 spacious bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.  This includes one bedroom on the ground floor in Garden Cottage. The Cider Mill is located across the paddock (1 minutes walk) and sleeps 6 in 3 en suite bedrooms. The Cider Mill is on one level. The accommodation is almost unique amongst the self catering industry in that there are 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms and sleep 24  in beds plus up to 5 infants in cots. The beds are very high specification and the linen is 400 count Egyptian cotton. Our guests often comment on their great quality of sleep. This matched accommodation is difficult to find.

For large groups the kitchen is particularly well equipped for catering and numbers.   There are 2 ovens, 2 dishwashers, an aga during the winter months and a number of fridge freeers. There is a huge supply of pans, crockery and equipment. The dining area can seat up to 24 both inside and outside. A great local caterer works in the house often when large groups come to stay. She is reasonably priced and has great reviews. She is well worth considering.

There are huge gardens and grounds at Monnington House and Garden Cottage plus the Cider Mill has a very pretty mature and enclosed garden. There is a large playing field with 2 football goals and in the outbuildings is the rustic table tennis room and a games room with pool table and table football. There is fantastic walking from the door including the Bredwardine to Byford section of the Wye Valley Walk and also the E1 part of Wye Walker. Across the river you can discover the wonderful walking trails at Moccas Park National Nature Reserve or for those who enjoy getting their heart racing a march up Hay Bluff should to be completed.

Guests also enjoy fishing on the Wye. Day passports can be obtained from the Fishing Passport. During the summer months days are spent canoeing and kayaking on the Wye and stopping at a suitable watering hole for lunch. Wild swimming is enjoyed too. The llamas in the Black Mountains are visited frequently where you can enjoy trekking with them for half a day. Nearby the Small Rare Breeds Farm at Kington amuses young and old with its charming miniature animals. A visit to Hay on Wye and its independent shops, galleries and cafes is always a treat. The nearby Weir Gardens built on the banks of the Wye are spectacular and interesting at all times of year. The Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral is fascinating and worth combing with a visit to Bills Cafe where you will find excellent home made food.

The properties do their job very well. We welcome large family groups who are often celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary as well as friends gatherings. The properties are extremely comfortable and graded 5 Star and 5 Star Gold by Visit England. The kitchen in the main house is very well equipped and geared up for catering for 24. The dining table seats 24. A local caterer work in the house often providing dinners which are reasonably priced and can be booked to come in and serve breakfast and leave a prepared lunch. For large numbers this is well worth considering.

Most of our guests love the great outdoors. Walking and cycling are enjoyed by many. We also welcome fishermen who love fishing on the Wye for salmon or coarse fishing. Day tickets can be purchased from Bulmers Angling Club or the Red Lion at Bredwardine to fish on the main Wye. Llama trekking in the Black Mountains is hugely therapeutic and increasingly popular with guests as is wild swimming in the Wye. Yoga in the local villages as well as tennis can be arranged.

Meet the owner

Anna Pearson Gregory

I manage and run Monnington House and the Cider Mill. My husband was brought up in the house. I used to run a National Lettings Department throughout London and the South West. I have 2 children who are now grown up and live in London but do visit regularly. When I am not busy with the House and Cider Mill I love cooking, being in my garden and growing flowers and vegetable, walking my 3 black Labradors who I have bred and being with my friends.
