Luxury self-catering collection Premier Cottages introduces its most eco friendly properties

Luxury UK self-catering collection, Premier Cottages (www.premiercottages.co.uk), features almost 1000 properties ranging from romantic bolt holes for two to large houses. Over a third of these properties have joined an independent environmental programme and many have taken this commitment one step further by adopting sustainable practises throughout the running of their businesses. Little White Alice, West Cornwall

Little White Alice features six multiple award winning cottages that combine luxury with a firm commitment to sustainability and green awareness. The property’s aim is be carbon neutral.

The cottages are less than ten miles from both the north and south coast. There are several local pubs within walking distance, which do great food. Facilities include: a totally unique and beautiful communal natural swimming pool with a reed bed filtration system, a wood burning hot tub powered by local wood off cuts and sunken sheltered fire pit, all set in 25 acres of land.

The property uses solar thermal panels for hot water and has a 6 kW wind turbine. Last year Little White Alice introduced 18 kW of Photo Voltaic panels and in total, the property now generates?29,300 kWh, offsetting 15.7 tonnes of CO2 a year. Rosehill Lodges, Cornwall

Local skilled craftsmen, in the small village of Porthtowan used materials from sustainable sources to build all of Rosehill's grass roofed eco lodges. Grass roofs provide high insulation levels and are warm in winter, cool in summer, great for wildlife, aesthetically pleasing and easily renewable.

The Lodges are located just five minutes walk from a Blue Flag beach with great surfing and rock pools. Each lodge features log burners for bio mass space heating. Logs are purchased from sustainable woodland in Cornwall. Every kitchen is built using 80% sustainable materials and water saving eco-click basin taps are fitted throughout. Higher Wiscombe in East Devon

Higher Wiscombe reflects a new breed of sustainable self-catering in the UK. The property offers three custom designed cottages, two that sleep six and one vast house that sleeps twenty. Built to high eco standards from 200-year-old barns they feature under floor heating throughout, low E triple AAA rated argon filled double-glazing and increased insulation.

The property offers breathtaking views over its 52 acres in all directions. The site has its own water supply and water treatments system, which work without chemicals. Higher Wiscombe also has a 150 kW Biomass system boiler burning a mix of wood waste and wood chip, which heats the entire site. Compton Pool Farm, Devon

Nestled in the South Hams among 14 stunning acres of fields, lakes and manicured

gardens, Compton Pool Farm is ideal for families looking for a relaxing break in the South West. The site is located in a sheltered rural valley just yards from the historic National Trust run Compton Castle.

It features eleven cottages, sleeping from 2 to 11 guests and offers superb on site facilities, including: a heated indoor pool, tennis court, lake fishing and extensive children’s play area. There is also a selection of farm animals for guests to enjoy.

Compton Pool Farm has won nine regional and national tourism awards. The site also has a coveted Green Tourism Gold award reflecting the owners’ commitment to the environment and sustainability. Treworgey, Looe Cornwall

Treworgey Cottages 18th Century cottages offer views over Cornwall’s tranquil Looe Valley to the river below and the pretty fishing port of Looe in the distance. Each of the cottages feature flagstone or wood floors, inglenook fireplaces and heavy beams, wool carpets and truly comfortable brass or romantic four-poster king size beds. Dogs are also welcome.

The property has recently installed a district biomass heating system and is going to grow its own fuel for this.  It uses photovoltaics for solar electricity and has for seven years been using solar evacuated tubes for water heating, a ground source heat pump for heating and hot water and a wind turbine for electricity generation.
