Hartland Peninsula, on the North Devon coast, is a truly special Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, jutting out in the far south west corner of the UK. The scenery is spectacular, with with awe-inspiring cliffs at Hartland quay which drop down to the small sandy beach. Low tide reveals magical rock pools giving an opportunity for children to spend many enjoyable hours.
Surrounding the Peninsula are some of the most stunning coastal walks, from Bucks Mills to Peppercombe Beach and the cobbled streets of Clovelly tumbling down to the pretty harbour. From there you can walk the coast to the rugged Westerly outpost of Hartland point towards Spekes Mill Mouth with its beautiful waterfall, and onwards to Welcombe Mouth and the border with Cornwall.
For garden lovers, Hartland offers a number of beautiful venues including Docton Mill and Hartland Abbey, where you can also enjoy a traditional Devon cream tea. Children are welcome in the gastro pubs and eateries in the area, and many happy days can be spent enjoying the delights of nearby beaches such as Spekes Mill, Welcombe Mouth, Duckpool and Sandymouth. For days when the sun doesn’t shine there are plenty of indoor opportunities and activities to amuse the children, and spas for the adults to indulge themselves.
Hartland holds its own farmers market every month in the village centre, where villagers and visitors jostle to purchase all of the very best local produce, from organic vegetables to locally reared venison, cheeses and hand baked bread.
