Cumbria is one of the most spectacular regions of the UK. Lakes, meres and mountains create a stunning landscape that is constantly changing throughout the seasons.
If you are planning a family break in Cumbria, it’s a good idea to plan your itinerary so that you can make the most of your time here. Staying in a self-catering cottage gives you the freedom to plan your own schedule. You’ll be surrounded by stunning countryside, with plenty of activities to keep children of all ages amused. There are also cultural attractions in the area, as well as shops and restaurants. But what else can you do in Cumbria?
1 – Explore Hadrian’s Wall
For the perfect way to explore Cumbria’s history, head for Hadrian’s Wall. This wall kept invading Scottish armies out of England and is a great choice for an active family day out.
2 – Enjoy active pursuits
Hiking around Hawkshead provides some great photo opportunities, as the scenery here is incredible. Alternatively, you could hire a bike and ride from Coniston to Dalton. Tiring the children out is sure to lead to a relaxing evening for Mums and Dads.
3 – A spot of shopping
Steer clear of the tourist-filled souvenir shops and instead explore Kendal’s range of independent stores. Delis stocking delicious meats and cheeses and local artisans and craftmakers offer something a little different.
4 – Take to the water
Children of all ages will enjoy exploring the local lakes. Rent a boat for the ideal way to see more of the Lake District, or take a boat trip to Piel Island. Situated off the coast near Barrow-in-Furness, the island has its own king and queen.
5 – Rainy day activities
On cold, wet days, Kendal Rock Climbing Centre is fun for all ages. Children will love the baking and craft workshops at Little Salkeld watermill.
Premier Cottages has 46 holiday cottages across Cumbria, ranging from standalone cottages to larger complexes for group holidays, which makes Cumbria the perfect base for exploring the region.
