The breathtaking landscape of the Suffolk countryside makes the area a popular destination for self-catering cottage holidays. With plenty of activities for outdoors enthusiasts, culture lovers and nature lovers, a cottage break in Suffolk is perfect for families and couples at any time of year. Here are some events and activities you simply must experience during your stay.

1. Africa Alive!

Children of all ages will love exploring this 100-acre safari park. It’s a great chance to get up close and personal with meerkats, giraffes, zebras and lions. Well, maybe not too close to the lions! If you’re lucky, you may even see some more unusual animals.

2. Learn about local history

Visit a National Trust property to learn more about the area’s history. Constable was inspired to paint ‘The Haywain’ by Flatford Mill in Dedham Vale, and a visit here makes for a great family day out.

3. Catch the Maritime Festival

Visiting Ipswich in mid-August means you can sample the delights of the Maritime Festival. Held on the Ipswich Waterfront, you can expect a varied programme of activities, plus some excellent local and international food and beer.

4. Aldeburgh Literary Festival

If you book a cottage break in Suffolk in late February/early March, you will be just in time for the Aldeburgh Literary Festival. Run by the Aldeburgh Bookshop, the event attracts authors from across the globe, and is a great day out for book lovers of all ages. Details of authors attending this year are available on the festival website

5. The Aviation Museum

The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum in Flixton is a must-see for aviation enthusiasts of all ages. There are over 60 aircraft here, as well as 30,000 artefacts. Opened in 1976, today the museum is home to East Anglia’s Aviation Heritage Centre. Expect to see aircraft including the Bristol Sycamore, Solo Striker and Westland Whirlwind.

With its extensive coastline, Suffolk is the perfect location for exploring the region.  Visit Premier Cottages to browse our stunning collection of award winning luxury cottages throughout Suffolk.
