The Peak District is one of the UK’s top destinations for cycling. In fact for many visitors the chance to roll up and down the hills amidst stunning scenery is the reason for being there. This summer the National Park is embracing its popularity for cycling with months of related events spread across the Peak District.
The ‘Summer of Cycling’ began in April and lasts until October 2014. It was partly inspired by the arrival of the Tour de France in the Peak District this year, with Stage 2 of the cycle race set to cross part of the National Park on July 6th.
There are many events due to take place across the width and breadth of the Peak District. Here some of the highlights.
Wiggle Tour of the Peak, starting in Bakewell – May 18th
The ultimate hill cycling event sees riders take on three of the Peak District’s most famous peaks – Winnats Pass, Holme Moss and the Cat and Fiddle. Participants can choose between 110-mile and 60-mile routes.
L’Eroica Britannia, Bakewell Showground – June 20th – 22nd
Dubbed a ‘vintage bicycle event’, this three day event is part festival, part bike ride. Participants can choose between a number of routes and are expected to wear vintage cycling gear.
Buxton Spa Sportive – July 27th
A picturesque cycling event stretching over 80 miles from Buxton, through part of Staffordshire and following a loop back to Buxton.
Mountain Bikes Skills courses – various locations and dates
A series of practical classes will be running throughout the summer that aim to teach cyclists the skills they need to traverse peaks and trails. Classes are available for beginners through to those ready to progress to more challenging technical skills.
