There are many beautiful walks on the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall. but these 3 are my favourite and are not particularly well known so you are almost guaranteed some peace and solitude.
1. Circular Walk at Messack Point, St Just in Roseland
A little known National Trust Farm at Messack has a walk that encompasses absolutely everything – rolling fields, ancient woods, tidal creeks, glimpses of St Just in Roseland Church and stunning river views across the Fal to Falmouth.
Visit in spring for the amazing display of bluebells, summer for a quick dip in the creek or autumn and winter to see the migrating birds who make the creek or the river their safe haven for the winter. Keen walkers can take the footpath to St Just in Roseland Church and then carry along the river all the way to St Mawes with it’s castle, pubs and restaurants.
A lovely walk with many strategically placed benches for you to while away some time just watching the view.
2. Percuil and Pelyn Creek Circular Walk, near Portscatho
This walk starts with a stunning hilltop views up and down the River Percuil, then winds alongside the river where you can watch the boats bobbing on the tide and keep an eye out for wildlife on the mudflats. Across the boat yard car park the walk then takes you down an beautiful avenue of trees into rolling pasture land and along to the tiny inlet of Pelyn. Herons nest in trees across the other side of the creek every spring. Here there are views of St Mawes, across the river. Finally a steep climb through woods and then back into arable fields, before returning for a last glimpse of the Percuil.
3. Turnaware Beach, Fal River St Just in Roseland
From the car park you can walk straight down the lane to the riverside beach, passing the memorial to the American soldiers who left from here to take part in the D Day landings at Omaha. On the beach are a few concrete blocks, which are all that remain of the two huge landing stages that were built out into the river. Across the river is Trelissick House a National Trust property. Spend some time on the beach, in summer you can watch all the boats go by, in winter at high tide there are often grey seals playing in the creek. Turn back up through and walk through the ancient oak woodland and follow the zig zag path back to the car park.
