Cottage holidays in the UK offer a chance to get back in touch with your rural heritage, and few properties enable you to really feel like a part of country life like farm cottages do. Some are based on former farms and can give your holiday a truly rustic feel, while other are situated on actual working farms and will provide you with a unique insight into rural life.
When you’re considering whether or not to stay in a farm cottage, it’s worth remembering that you will inevitably be a little further away from more urban amenities such as shops and restaurants. However, if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of life for a little peace and quiet then for a while that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Similarly, you’ll be much closer to charming country walks, iconic British wildlife and picturesque rural villages with traditional pubs.
For inspiration, here are a few actual farm cottages that you can stay in.
Orwell View Barns, Suffolk
Situated on a farm but away from the actual working farmyard area, the Orwell View Barns are three modern converted eco-barns. The Orwell in question is the River Orwell, and the cottages provide great views of the river and plenty of opportunity for relaxing walks along the riverside. Best of all though, you’ll have access to 700 acres of farmland teeming with wildlife and bird life to discover.
Broadwood Farm, Somerset
Somerset has some truly beautiful countryside that evokes a bygone age, and Broadwood Farm offers a wonderfully relaxing place to enjoy it. Situated down a long, private country road, the farm cottage has six bedrooms so is suitable for large families and groups. There is also a private garden with play area for younger members of your party.
Coopers Farm Cottage, Sussex
Coopers Farm Cottage is on a working livestock farm, so is great if you have young children who you’d like to introduce to the ways of the countryside. Amongst the fields of sheep, cows and pigs you’ll also find 90 acres of meadow to wander amongst, and there are lots of walking routes to follow. The cottage itself is decorated in a traditional country style, antique furniture standing side by side with modern amenities.
Middle Farm, Shropshire
This smallholding is home to 3 beautifully furnished cottages on the South Shropshire hills. It is home to British Lop pigs, rare breed chickens, Soay sheep, and a mountain of fruit and vegetables. The cottages sleep 2 or 6 guests (dogs welcome in Gooseyard Cottage, which sleeps 2), and guests also have access to a two and a half acre fishing lake.
Tredithick, Cornwall
Tredithick offers very family-friendly farm holidays, with animals to feed, ponies to ride, places to play, a pool to discover, new places and new friends to see and make, all in beautiful, secluded, Cornish countryside. There are 9 cottages, sleeping 3 to 6 guests each, and the daily supervised animal feeding is a big hit with the small people.
