About & Contact

Ideal for families or groups!

Scarfell Cottage was the former main barn at Bridge End Farm, with the full height barn doors which are now its double-glazed majestic entrance. The uppermost part of the windows reaches the first floor twin bedroom where, if you look closely, you will spot the secret floor level spy hole!

Named after Scafell, the second highest mountain in England and neighbour to England’s highest, Scafell Pike, Scafell Cottage presents itself as the largest of the cottages and potentially the oldest, as according to a National Park archaeologist, the barns may have preceded the building of The Farmhouse by up to 100 years!

The downstairs of the cottage is consequently bathed in natural light and the ceiling centrally remains full height, with the bedrooms located to either side. The first floor bedroom has been maintained as a galleried feature of the cottage in order to preserve the downstairs expanse and does of course have curtains to maintain privacy.

A ground floor bedroom and bathroom make it ideal for disabled guests or those with limited mobility.

Perfect for large groups or families. It is delightfully open plan with a good flow for everyone. The children often sit playing their games on the carpeted area between the lounge and kitchen leaving the adults free to relax on the sofas. As well as the full Sky TV package, Scafell has many novels to choose from and there is a CD player, iPod dock and children’s games to entertain everyone. There is plenty of space for everyone to sit together at mealtimes, whilst there is also privacy, generated by the layout of the bedrooms. The backdoors from the kitchen open out onto the lawned paddock affording lovely fell views so step out of an evening and light the barbecue to enjoy dining al fresco.

Accommodation Summary:

Ground floor: open plan kitchen with all modern appliances. Large dining area and lounge. One double bedroom with king-size bed and ensuite bathroom with separate bath and shower cubicle, ideal for disabled guests or those with limited mobility. Also, an additional family shower room with powerful shower.

First floor: 1 double bedroom with king-size bed and ensuite bathroom with slipper bath.

First floor: 1 triple bedroom with 3 single beds, 1 gallery twin bedroom with 2 single beds and full length pull across curtain.

On request a fold out Z bed for a young child or teenager and/or cot available.

You would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful and tranquil corner of the Lake District than the Eskdale Valley. The combination of the amazing location and accommodation provides the perfect ingredients for a superb holiday. The cottages are the perfect base to explore all of the treasures Eskdale and the surrounding area has to offer. Close by is the beautiful, deep, Wastwater Lake, England's deepest at 79 metres, and about 3 miles long. Also, near is the majestic Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England and one of England's most scenic hikes.

The 2 village pubs, The Boot Inn and Brook House Inn are within walking distance including a post office and village shop. There is also England’s oldest, working twin-wheel corn mill museum, Hardknott Pass (England’s steepest road) and a narrow-gauge steam railway - all close by.

There are plenty of walks with lovely views of waterfalls, lakes, rockpools and you’ll spot lots of wildlife along the way. Also, a great place for cycling; Eskdale Cycle Trail is a wonderful way to explore the valley with many stops along the way which are perfect for a picnic. Bring your bikes or hire them locally.

Other activities close by are: climbing, abseiling, canoeing, pony trekking, fishing and swimming (in hot weather) and much more.

Meet the owner

Greg Poole

Now in our 29th year of providing exclusive, luxury accommodation here at Bridge End Farm Cottages, myself, Greg, and the team at Select Cottages are assuredly well-versed in providing all our guests with a truly exceptional Lakeland experience. Having lived and brought up a family in The Farmhouse, we now often return for our own holidays, as you can see from the photos! My connections with Premier Cottages go back a long way too! As one of the founding members and original Directors I introduced the name 'Premier Cottages' and served on the Board the first 4 years with responsibility for the brochure, marketing and recruitment. I am very proud that Bridge End Farm Cottages are one of less than a dozen properties that have remained under the same ownership and have continuously advertised in Premier Cottages in all 20 years of its existence! We look forward to personally welcoming you and your family in our Lakeland paradise!
