Rural heaven near the East Devon Jurassic Coast and South West Coast Path


Our courtyard of luxurious barn conversions are situated in the peaceful and beautiful Southleigh valley at the centre of East Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just four miles from the spectacular Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and The South West Coast Path, with beaches at Beer, Branscombe and Sidmouth.

The 3/4 mile private drive leads to our 52 acres of rolling Devon countryside. All our light and airy cottages have private gardens and you are welcome to explore our woodlands, orchard, pasture and streams. You will enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views with sheep grazing gently for most of the year.

Combining exposed beams and brickwork with quality oak kitchens, modern showers, our cottages are stylish and comfortable. Double bedrooms have 6’ wide double beds, twin bedrooms have 3’ wide beds all with crisp white Egyptian cotton bed linen. All the bedrooms are en suite and have fluffy white towels for that additional pampering. The cool slate flooring in the summer and underfloor heating and woodburners in the winter ensure luxury all year.

Our games room has a full size table-tennis table and table football and in summer there is an outdoor heated pool which each cottage has two slots a day for exclusive use. Bookings that include The Flint Barn even has access to a cinema room/conference room. All properties have access to EV Charging, included in the price.

Historic Lyme Regis with its famous Cobb and fossiling at Charmouth are nearby as are The East Devon Way and The South West Coastal Path. Close to numerous National Trust properties, RSPB reserves, family attractions, as well as Dartmoor and Exmoor.

The two best gastro pubs in the South West are within five miles, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstalls 'River Cottage' and Hix’s fish restaurant are within 20 minutes.

Meet the owner

Lorna or Alistair Handyside

Alistair and Lorna Handyside are the owners of Higher Wiscombe. We have three grown children and live in the farmhouse near the three holiday cottages. We opened the business seventeen years ago and really enjoy helping make sure that guests have a great holiday here. Lorna has a background in the city and Alistair in IT. Alistair also Chairs the South West Coast Path and is Vice Chair of the East Devon AONB. We are passionate about our business and do our best to ensure every guest’s stay at Higher Wiscombe is the best it can be. We have a wealth of knowledge about the area which we enjoy sharing so that you can discover all the best bits whilst you are here.

Heritage Beer Quarry Caves

2,000 years of underground history, vast inside and the tour guides are excellent, tales of Romans, Pirates and corrupt Bishops. The Stone was used to build Exeter Cathedral.
