Gloucestershire has a splendid variety of pubs, many having their own unique points of interest. Here are the Best Pubs for a Winter Tipple in Gloucestershire.
The Plough at Ford http://www.theploughinnford.co.uk/ , between Cheltenham and Stow-on-the-Wold, serves fresh local produce and the local Donnington Ales. It’s firmly embedded in the horseracing world, being visited by renowned trainers and jockeys. The Plough celebrates the major racing events at Cheltenham such as the Gold Cup week when you can watch the racing on large flat screen TVs and have meals any time of the day.
The Daffodil http://www.thedaffodil.com/ in Cheltenham is one of the best surviving examples of original Art Deco cinema design and is not so much a pub as a dining experience! No longer used as a cinema, it now offers a combination of excellent food and top class entertainment in the form of live jazz on Monday nights and Saturday lunchtimes featuring some of the best UK jazz artists. The Daffodil is now as stylish and vibrant as in its glory days as a cinema nearly a century ago.
Tunnel House Inn http://www.tunnelhouse.com/ at Coates, near Cirencester was originally built as lodgings in the 1780’s for the navvies working on the Sapperton tunnel on the Thames & Severn canal. The Tunnel House now serves delicious food sourced locally from the nearby Butts Farm Shop and Bibury Trout Farm as well as produce from their own orchard, hens and herb garden!
The Eight Bells http://www.eightbellsinn.co.uk/ in the delightful Cotswold market town of Chipping Campden has massive character with log fires and flagstone floor. It offers a great variety of ales, ciders and wines and is a great start or finishing point for the Cotswold Way Walk http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/cotswold-way along the Cotswold escarpment between Chipping Campden and Bath. It’s also a great watering hole on the occasion of the Cotswold Olympicks http://www.olimpickgames.com/ held annually in May.
The Royal Oak at Gretton http://royaloakgretton.co.uk/ is well stocked with local ales, wines and cider. The pub has great views across the valley to the Malvern Hills. For train enthusiasts, steam trains run “at the bottom of the garden” on the local Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway http://www.gwsr.com/ between Toddington and Cheltenham.
