The Cotswolds offers visitors and guests to our luxury cottages throughout the region the chance to explore some quintessentially English country villages, full of thatched cottages, village ponds and friendly, welcoming pubs and inns. It’s no surprise that this is the part of the country that inspired the Bard himself – so . Most are available all year round, making The Cotswolds an ideal destination for spring and autumn breaks, as well as summer holidays. So here is our guide to things to do in the Cotswolds.
Blast Off Into The Jet Age
While you may assume that everything in The Cotswolds is tranquil and calm, this part of the world has had a major role to play in something much more high tech (and noisy!) – the jet engine. The Jet Age Museum in Gloucester takes you on a tour of the history of the jet engine’s development and its importance in aviation.
If that’s all a little too loud for you then head off for a long walk to the top of Middle Hill and the magnificent Broadway Tower. Designed by Capability Brown (better known, perhaps, for his gardens rather than follies), it rewards those who are prepared to trek up quite a steep path with breathtaking views of the Malvern Hills. On a clear day, you can see as many as 16 counties from the viewing platform at the top of the tower!
Water Skis and Wildlife Parks
If you’re after an adrenaline rush and don’t mind getting a little wet then head to South Cerney for a day’s waterboarding and water-skiing. However, if you prefer to meet the local wildlife in a slightly more sedate manner then head to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens at Burford, a family day out that introduces you to some more exotic visitors as well as our native plants and animals.
Galloping Off to the Races
The Cotswolds are home to that iconic sporting venue, Cheltenham Racecourse. If you fancy a flutter then races are held here all year round. During Gold Cup week it can get very busy, but Cheltenham is regarded as the spiritual home of Jump Racing, so there are always plenty of races throughout the year.
The Sweet Smell of The Cotswolds
There are plenty of more unusual museums and attractions to visit throughout the region, and one of the more popular is the Cotswold Perfumery Museum at Bourton-on-the-water. While you’re in Bourton, check out the Model Village too, a scaled-down version of the village that’s astonishingly detailed.
