Days out in the Peak District are an opportunity to explore the wide-open spaces or the more quirky side of this fascinating region. So here are a few that we’ve picked out that are a little out of the ordinary for you to discover when you stay at one of our luxury cottages.
The Canals of the Peak District
Before the age of steam and the invention of the car, goods were moved around by water. The Peak District’s network of canals were crucial to the prosperity of the county, and today they offer visitors a more relaxed way of exploring the countryside. Canal boat trips from Tapton Lock Visitors Centre let you take a journey along the Chesterfield canal, and some trips are also accessible for wheelchair users.
Get Out on Two Wheels
The Peak District lends itself perfectly to cycling and exploring, and the Hicks Lodge National Forest Cycling Centre offers everyone of all abilities the chance to explore this spectacular part of the National Forest on two wheels. From gentle, flat tracks through to more challenging rides, the Centre gives you a chance to get out and about.
Castles and Caverns
Motoring enthusiasts will make a beeline for Castle Donnington, home to not only one of the most popular race tracks in the country but a wealth of historical displays, exhibitions and a rather fine country house to explore too. There’s nothing nicer than a romantic walk with a loved one, and you can’t get much more tranquil than the aptly named Lover’s Walk at Matlock Bath – an undiscovered gem that is particularly beautiful in the spring. There’s as much to explore underground in the Peak District as there is on the surface, and a great way to delve deeper (quite literally) into the county is to head for Speedwell Cavern at Castleton, where you can go on a boat trip 450m beneath ground level! The Peak District Mining Museum in Matlock shows you how humans have shaped the underground landscape of the region over the centuries, and is full of interesting exhibitions and mock-ups of tunnels where you can get a real feel for the lives of the miners through the centuries.
Scaling the Heights
If all of that underground exploration has left you feeling a little claustrophobic, then head for one of Derbyshire’s main attractions, the Heights of Abraham, and take a cable car ride that takes you to the very top of Masson Hill.
